One of the most common questions we receive is what exactly is a “carat?”. Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs. A “carat” is defined as 1/5 of a gram.
Often times a jeweler or someone else may refer to the weight of a diamond in “points.”. This is because each carat can be subdivided into 100 ‘points.’. By referring to the weight in points it allows for incredibly accurate measurements to the hundredth decimal place. For example, a .85 carat diamond may be referred to as an “eighty-five pointer.” If the diamond weight is over a carat, lets say 1.05, it would be described as “one hundred and five points.”
